Usafi Youth Group / Kibera Slum, Nairobi, Kenya
Termed "youth groups" on the street, grassroots initiatives led by young men in Kibera provide community services and employment opportunities to families in their community. The Usafi Youth Group is a non-profit youth initiative whose mission is to provide a forum for the empowerment of persons, ideas and skills in development of the general public by encouraging proper solid waste management, participatory development and promote self reliance. Here, volunteers with Usafi Youth Group demonstrate the use of pit latrines as a low cost waste management system. The grave-like pits are used to clear trash mounds and open plots for sustainable agriculture projects on top of the newly fertilized earth.
